The Australian Department of Defence has formally opened a new project office to oversee planning for a new front line fighter for the Royal Australian Air Force. The project, designated Air 6000, is to be headed by Wg Cdr Mel Hupfeld. However, the work, estimated to be worth more than A$7 billion ($4.4 billion), is unlikely to see any acquisition activity until at least 2005.
