Australia's transport minister has approved a master-plan for Brisbane Airport that involves building an additional runway and expanding the domestic terminal.
"To meet Brisbane's growing need for aviation infrastructure, the airport's master-plan sets out a substantial investment programme including an expansion of its domestic terminal, upgrades to its aprons and taxiways and a new parallel runway," says Anthony Albanese who is the minister for infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government.
He says he has approved the master-plan but the airport needs to do more to engage the local community and address the community's concerns about aircraft noise.
He says the airport must try to minimise aircraft noise over urban areas and that the government "will periodically review the need for a curfew at the airport."
The airport says it plans to spend A$4.2 billion ($3.7 billion) over the next two decades to increase the airport's capacity.
It adds, the "master plan outlines the planning vision for Queensland's gateway international airport that is expected to serve around 40 million passengers and host around 40,000 full-time workers within the next 20 years."
