Australia is close to finalising its purchase of Lockheed Martin/Rafael AGM-142 medium range air-to-ground precision guided missiles. Canberra announced its intention to buy the weapon two years ago and Lockheed Martin expected that details on the scope and value of the sale would be worked out before the end of 1996. No deal was signed, but the US Department of Defense intends to sell 51 AGM-142 missiles, 10 training missiles and related hardware worth an estimated $90 million to Australia. Official notification of the foreign military sales transaction should produce a final contract in the near term.
