Australian regional carrier Regional Express (Rex) will commence services on the Townsville-Mackay route from 1 October, marking its re-entry into Queensland.

Rex will operate Saab 340s on the route, Rex says, adding that there will be 17 services per week.

Rex previously flew the Maryborough-Brisbane route, but had to suspend this owing to last year's pilot shortage.

"Rex subsidiary Pel-Air has been successfully providing specialist charter services for Barrick Gold between Townsville airport and Osborne Mine since February 2009, and this provides an excellent platform to service the regional communities with regular air services," says Rex general manager for network strategy and sales, Warrick Lodge.

Rex operates a fleet of 40 Saab 340s, mainly in the Australian states of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.
