Austrian Airlines is to co-operate with an aviation technology college in Langenlebarn to train maintenance staff.
The school is located around 25km (16mi) northwest of Vienna.
The partnership should shorten the time necessary for students at the school to become fully licensed aircraft engineers, from nine to five years, says the wholly owned Lufthansa carrier.
In the past, graduates of the four-year school programme had to work as unlicensed technicians and complete additional training courses to become fully qualified engineers.
Now, the graduates can gain their European Aviation Safety Agency qualification after a single year of practical experience.
The change is a result of a “know-how transfer” from the carrier’s MRO department, Austrian Technik, to the college, says the airline.
Lecturers of the school will be trained at Austrian’s in-house technical training department, while the airline’s instructors will teach at the college.
Austrian Technik employs a technical staff of around 400.
