Amimon has introduced the Skylink, a wireless video link for UAVs that has virtually zero latency at 500m range.
"It's not compression and decompression in the traditional way. We developed a system based on joint-source channel coding where we divided the video into layers of visual importance," says David Shefler, vice president of sales and marketing. It is different from most links in that it is tailored for video; other video links, says Amimon, send the video, telemetry and other data en masse, sometimes leading to low-quality video reception.
The company built wireless links for Hollywood and surgical cameras. The Skylink is Amimon's first foray into the UAV business. Though mainly aimed at small civilian UAVs, the company is interested in expanding into the military market.
"We are looking into the military market, and they are looking into us," says Shefler.
