Welcome to AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2011!

Washington, D.C., has had a hot summer, but it's only going to get hotter now that AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2011 has opened, bringing with it more exhibitors, more attendees, and more educational and networking opportunities than ever before.

We have more than 500 exhibitors, and our lineup of speakers and educational opportunities is second to none: There are more than 150 technical presentations, panel discussions, workshops and poster presentations, a new record. Our lineup of daily speakers is also stellar, kicking off today with Lt. Gen. Rick Lynch, commanding general of the

US Army Installation Management Command is a passionate advocate of relying on unmanned systems to keep soldiers out of harm's way.

Last year for the first time, we added a fourth day to the event, and there's so much to see and do and learn that we're keeping that schedule for 2011. We're again hosting three demonstration areas within the exhibit hall for air, ground and maritime vehicles, including our unique 30-foot water tank for maritime systems. The robots will be keeping a busy schedule, so be sure to drop by the demonstration areas often. We're also continuing last year's popular Beyond the Booth Showcase, where exhibitors will take the stage to demonstrate their products and make announcements; a full schedule is posted in the hall.

As it is every year, AUVSI's Unmanned Systems North America 2011 is a great opportunity to network and interact with colleagues in the field of unmanned systems and have a little fun at the same time. One way to do that, and to help up-and-coming unmanned systems experts, is to join us at Party with a Purpose, on behalf of the AUVSI Foundation. The restaurant Cuba Libre's atmosphere offers a unique combination of Latin flavor, warmth and splendor, from the re-creation of an Old Havana street to the steamy Cuban rhythms! Best of all, the money goes to providing students with the opportunity to experience fun, hands-on robotic activities that encourage skills in science, technology, engineering and math.

Continuing with the travel theme, please join us at Thursday night's networking event, AUVSI's Global Getaway, sponsored by Northrop Grumman. Experience a trip around the world in an evening filled with mahogany bars, pool tables, a round of golf on premier links, a spin of the money wheel, Singapore Slings made Raffles style, and more.

If you're serving your country in uniform, we thank you for that, and don't forget to wear it on Friday, August 19 - uniformed personnel will have free access to the event.

Enjoy the show.
