France-based SBG Systems (booth 4029) is marketing its SmartFusion solution at AUVSI, an algorithm-based upgrade that can boost the accuracy of a low-cost inertial navigation system (INS) by a factor of 10.
The privately held company has produced more than 3,000 of its watch-sized IG-500 inertial systems to date, mostly as a subcontractor to defense firms such as EADS, Sagem and Thales, says chief marketing officer Raphael Siryani.
With SmartFusion, SBG puts a micro INS system onboard a customer platform for thousands of hours, gathering data which is then used to fine tune the extended Kalman filter at the core of the INS for that particular application. "It's better than just an extended Kalman filter," says Siryani.
