Wind River has introduced a secure platform for use on tablets running Android, introducing several useful features for operators that require high level of security yet undiminished functionality.

Company executive Tim Skutt demonstrated the platform's features on an Android tablet in the Wind River stand.

One useful feature is the ability to open two windows at the same time. Skutt showed how a user can have one panel showing a UAV's flight path, while the other panel showed a standard Google map. The two panels can be used to run virtually any Android app simultaneously.

Wind River is no stranger to Android, and was invited by Google to be one of the original members of the Open Handset Alliance when Android was launched in 2007.

Although Skutt demonstrated Wind River's Android platform with a tablet, he says it is equally functional on other platforms, namely smart phones running Android.

The platform can also allow the user to determine the level of security required for particular applications. It offers a range of security levels, from normal to highly secure.

"This platform allows Android apps to run normally, but in a secure environment," says Skutt.
