AVCON INDUSTRIES IS flight-testing an improved version of its Avcon Fins aerodynamic-stabilisation device on a Learjet 35 business jet. Newton, Kansas-based Avcon says that the fins provide additional lift and stability at lower airspeeds and enhance controllability during approach and landing.

The angled vertical surfaces, mounted under the rear fuselage, were modified after flight-testing in mid-1995 revealed problems with "better-than-expected low-speed performance", says Avcon. The delta-shaped fins were revised to meet certification requirements, and current flight tests "...indicate that the problems have been resolved", the company says.

Avcon anticipates a supplemental type-certificate to install the fins on Learjet 35s and 36s, and plans to certificate the devices on the Learjet 20. The company hopes to modify around 500 of some 1,000 eligible aircraft, at an expected installed price of $110,000 per aircraft. Initial installations will be performed by Avcon.
