British Airways initiated transatlantic services with its Boeing 777s on 27 October, between London Heathrow and Boston. Until now, the airline has been forced to deploy the 777 on its Gulf routes, because of the delay in extended-range twin-engined operations approval of the General Electric GE90-powered version. BA will launch 777 services to the US West Coast in 1997 when it introduces the longer-range 777-200IGW variant.
