British Airways has named former Aer Lingus head Willie Walsh as its new chief executive to succeed Rod Eddington, who will retire from the carrier at the end of September. Walsh, who left Aer Lingus earlier this year, will take over as chief executive-designate on 3 May. Starting at Aer Lingus as a cadet pilot in 1979, Walsh worked his way up to become the head of its Spanish charter unit Futura in 1998. He returned as Aer Lingus' chief operating officer two years later before taking over the top position in the aftermath of the events of September 2001.
