British Aerospace Australia (BAeA) has finalised negotiations for a A$40 million ($26 million) five-year support contract for the Royal Australian Air Force's 1RSU operational over-the-horizon radar (OTHR).

BAeA was selected as the preferred supplier for the requirement in May. The contract includes options for three extensions of two years each.

The 1RSU radar array is near Alice Springs in Central Australia, with the operational command centre relocated to RAAF Base Edinburgh, near Adelaide. The radar was built in 1987 as a concept demonstrator before the development of the full Jindalee OTHR system and handed over to the RAAF in 1992.

The five-year contract will see BAeA provide software and hardware maintenance, and support for ongoing research into OTHR technology.
