BAE Systems will cut 1,396 jobs, of which 672 are engineering jobs, at 13 sites across the UK during 2005. The commercial and military avionics business will bear the brunt of the cuts, with 431 job losses. The defence repairs business at Chadderton will close by the end of the year, with the loss of 335 jobs, mostly in the second half of 2005. The decision "follows a review of current and future defence repairs workload and reflects the continued downturn in work available to the business", says BAE. Repair work on Royal Air Forcecombat aircraft will be carried out by the RAF after the closure.
