BAE Systems announced on Thursday it had won the contract to upgrade Slovakia's national Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system.

The Slovak armed forces operate equipment which is primarily of Soviet origin, and upgrading IFF is seen as a key part of modernising the Slovak air force to enable it to operate alongside the NATO allies which it aspires to join. BAE's Communications, Navigation, Identification and Reconnaissance (CNIR) Group won the contract after a fierce competition with a Raytheon-Thales-Aviation Service team.
