The Baltimore Police Department (BPD) has ordered four Eurocopter EC120's to replace its current fleet, which features four of the type.

The new helicopters will form part of a fleet renewal program, with the first delivery scheduled for summer 2012.

"The reasons we chose the EC120 to upgrade our fleet are the same reasons we chose them in the first place," said Lt Don Bauer, aviation commander for the BPD. "It is always reliable, it's fuel efficient and quiet. Out of all the aircraft we evaluated, nothing beats the EC120 for our department and our missions."

The Balitmore Police Department already has four Eurocopter EC120's

The BPD uses EC120s for airborne law enforcement including patrols and support duties, as well as homeland security missions.

Its current EC120s were purchased in 2000, and the fleet now has more than 35,000 flight hours.

The new EC120's will be fitted with advanced avionics and mission equipment, including a thermal imager, searchlight, moving map and video downlink systems.
