Forty-five years after it added chill to the Cold War, an infamous international incident is finally about to do some good in the form of a big cheque for Orbis, operator of the flying eye hospital.

Martin Craigs with model U-2 spyplaneThis model of a Lockheed U-2 spyplane, as flown by USAF Col Gary Powers before he was shot down over Russia in 1960, has been signed by modern superband U2 and is being auctioned by fundraisers Aerospace Asia Forum to make money for Orbis.

The model, in the colours of the marketing campaign for the latest U2 album, How To Dismantle A Nuclear Bomb, is pictured here with AFA president Martin Craigs. "We've had an opening bid of $10,000 from Air Asia group CEO Tony Fernandes," says Martin. "I'll be disappointed if we don't make at least $25,000 in the end."
