Passenger traffic at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport grew 28% in January, with the domestic market contributing strong growth.

The total number of passengers handled by Thailand's main international gateway grew 28% to 4.2 million, says national airports operator Airports of Thailand (AoT).

Domestic passenger numbers rose 45% to one million, while international passenger numbers increased 24% to 3.2 million, adds AoT.

In terms of cargo, total freight handled by the airport grew 47% to 101,462t, says the airport operator.

Total aircraft movements rose 13% to 23,447, it adds.

Apart from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airport, AoT also operates airports in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai.

Passenger traffic for all six airports grew 23% to 5.7 million, says AoT. Domestic passenger numbers rose 19% to 2.2 million, while international passenger numbers increased 25% to 3.5 million.

Total aircraft movements grew 14% to 35,459, says AoT.

On the cargo front, the total freight handled by the six airports grew 42% to 107,926t, adds the airport operator.
