Total passenger traffic at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport grew 4.9% in 2009 from a year ago, driven by strong growth in the domestic market.
The total number of passengers handled by Thailand's main international gateway grew 4.9% to 40.5 million from 38.6 million, says Airports of Thailand (AoT).
Domestic passenger traffic grew 46% to 10.2 million, but international passenger traffic fell 4.2% to 30.3 million, says AoT. Total aircraft movements grew 3.4% to 253,967.
In terms of cargo, total freight traffic at Suvarnabhumi dropped 10.8% to 1.1 million tonnes. Domestic cargo traffic grew 69% to 38,999 tonnes, but international cargo traffic fell 12.3% to 1 million tonnes, says AoT.
Apart from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, AOT also operates airports in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai.
Passenger traffic for all six airports fell 0.9% to 53.9 million. Domestic passenger traffic grew 5.4% to 21.1 million, while international passenger traffic fell 4.5% to 32.8 million. Total aircraft movements fell 2.4% to 362,476, says AoT.
Total cargo traffic for all six airports fell 11.8% to 1.1 million tonnes. Domestic cargo traffic decreased 3.8% to 94,066t from 97,763t, while international cargo traffic dropped 12.5% to 1 million tonnes, says AoT.
