Fairchild Aircraft Services has obtained supplemental type certification for the replacement of nickel-cadmium batteries with lead-acid batteries on Fairchild Metro III and SA227 AC/BC aircraft. Fairchild says that the conversion improves hot-and-cold temperature starts, lessens engine and starter-generator maintenance requirements, eliminates the battery- temperature monitoring system, and reduces the number of ground power units required at airports.
