Reacting to the news, European competitors say the consolidation underlines existing battle lines. "We are used to fighting our corner in this market," says Eurocopter's Marc Jouan. "We have great confidence in our products and we see nothing to change that view."

Sikorsky president Gene Buckley has already taken a bullish stand on the state of the market this week, saying: "In my book competition is good for business. I think it makes everyone strive harder to succeed."

Bell also revealed yesterday that Aerostructures is the first risk-sharing partner to join the Bell Boeing 609 tilt rotor programme. It will provide the fuselage for the aircraft. Bell is looking to recruit more partners
