Bell Helicopter is still pondering whether it makes sense to launch an improved Model 412+ helicopter and says it will announce its plans by the end of the year.

If the go-ahead is given, the project would be a Bell Agusta-driven programme, adding to the BA609 tiltrotor and AB139 joint ventures.

Meanwhile, Bell says its order book for the 609 now stands at almost 80 aircraft, with sales split between individual corporate customers and large corporations around the globe.

"If we do decide to proceed with the 412+ it will have enhanced systems, engines, rotors and cockpit," says Terry Stinson, Bell chairman and CEO.

"There is some overlap with the 139, but not as much as you might think."

Stinson says the 412+ would be substantially less expensive than the AB139 which Bell Agusta will sell for a baseline figure of $6 million.

It would have lower fuel consumption, improved operating efficiencies and increased payload.
