Operator Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg has set October 2020 as the new opening date for the city's much-delayed new airport.
There has been no firm opening date set for Berlin Brandenburg since it abandoned a planned 2017 start, with the operator saying only it was targeting completing all construction work at the new airport by August 2018.
After reviewing progress on the project the airport operator's supervisory board says it has approved a management report commissioning the opening of the new Brandenburg gateway for October 2020.
"As a result of the intensive consultation, there is consensus that a responsible and valid assessment is now available, which provides a realistic basis for further work until commissioning," it says.
Brandenburg was developed to replace the city's Tegel and Schonefeld airports but the project has been plagued by delays, since construction work finally began in 2006. Notably a planned inauguration was cancelled just weeks before it was due to open in June 2012, as a result of concerns over the terminal's fire-protection system. Multiple new target dates were subsequently set – and all abandoned as inspections and repair works over the years revealed additional areas of construction work that required modification.
"The supervisory board meeting marks the start of the final phase of the terminal's completion, and thus the start of BER," says Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg board chairman Engelbert Lutke Daldrup. "It is important that the supervisory board supports the opening date of October 2020 after a dedicated debate. The appointment is reliable and reliable. That's how we create security and orientation."
It will now work on finalising the financing requirements to meet the planned opened date. "FBB will use all available options for equity and debt financing," it notes. "The supervisory board will be advised in its meeting at the beginning of March 2018 about the additional financing required until the opening."
