Rather than turning it up, Boeing has turned the heat down in its battle with Airbus.

As part of its drive to provide improved passenger comfort Boeing has ordered 150 new air-conditioning units for its 767-400ER aircraft scheduled to roll out of the factory this summer.

Each aircraft will feature twin air-conditioning packs.

Hamilton Sundstrand, selected in 1997 to undertake the task of compressing the existing technology from the larger Boeing 777 so that it fits the 767, has completed delivery of the first two air-conditioning packs. Dave Hess, vice-president of environmental control systems for Hamilton Sundstrand explains the need to develop advanced air-conditioning technology.

The solution in the case of the 767 is Hamilton Sundstrand's patented condensing cycle technology which Hess says offers weight, reliability and performance benefits as well as cost improvement.
