Are you the 2009 Engineering Student of the Year?

Boeing Integrated Defense Systems is proud to sponsor the fourth annual Engineering Student of the Year in association with Flight International. This exciting award is open to engineering students around the world. The winner will be honored this November at the Dubai Airshow and have the chance to meet and network with aerospace leaders at one of the industry’s biggest international events.

The key criterion for this award is the impact, or potential for impact, of the candidate's work on current or future aeronautical or space technology. This impact might be seen in:- new or enhanced systems, processes or tools; new levels of performance; improved life cycle costs; new capabilities; or other areas. The award is open to any full- or part-time engineering student in a program leading to a recognized academic degree such as B.S., M.S. or Ph.D.

The 2009 entries will be judged by a distinguished panel of former Boeing senior technical fellows. Students can enter themselves, or a professor may nominate on behalf of a student. Entries should include the nominee’s contact details, a 500-word summary and supporting material, which could include new patents or documented applications that have been adopted by industry, or published papers or research that have won recognition from academic, professional or industrial associations. The deadline for entries is September 25.

The winner and a companion will be guests of Boeing at the Dubai Airshow, which is scheduled for November 15-19. The award will be presented on November 14 as part of Flightglobal’s pre-show awards event. Boeing will arrange free air travel, hotel accommodation and airshow tickets for two persons.

2008 Agnes Blom, Delft University of Technology


Agnes Blom receives her award from Darrell Warner of Boeing

The 2008 Engineering Student of the Year was Agnes Blom, the first international winner and the first woman to receive this honor. She is now finishing her Ph.D. in aerospace engineering at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and is a researcher at Stork Fokker. Her specialty is the development of advanced, fiber-steered, variable-stiffness composite laminates and the judges felt her doctoral research in composites design and analysis applied to many areas within the aerospace industry.

Here’s what Agnes had to say about her experience:

“The past year has been very exciting. I have learned about some of the latest technologies, met experts and leaders in different areas of aerospace engineering, and spoken to high school students about pursuing careers in this field. As Engineering Student of the Year, new opportunities have opened up to me and forever changed my perspectives.”

2007 Kevin Lohner, Stanford University


Boeing Young Student of the year 2007 Kevin Lohner

The 2007 winner, Kevin Lohner, has already carved out a career in the aerospace industry, specializing in the development and testing of advanced materials and components. He began his academic career at Purdue University in Indiana where he gained a Bachelor of science in Materials Science and Engineering, and went on to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he added a Master of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics. He holds three patents and has published several research papers. He due to graduate from Stanford University in California in August 2008.

Here's what Mr Lohner had to say about his experience

"Boeing has always symbolized innovation and excellence in the field of aerospace, therefore this award was such a great honor to receive. It only further encourages my passion for my research in propulsion and energy systems for manned space exploration. Receiving the award and attending the various events and festivities was truly memorable. It gave me a chance to see some of the best technologies and meet some of the most influential people in the aerospace community. By Boeing sponsoring this award to recognize young engineers with promising ideas, they are stimulating overall awareness and healthy competition to help solve the future aerospace issues affecting our world."

2006 Jim Gregory, Purdue University


Boeing Young Student of the year 2006 Jim Gregory

The recipient was Jim Gregory, who was a Purdue University post-graduate when he won the award in February 2006. The award recognized Gregory’s development of a new testing technique for rapidly changing pressure through a porous pressure-sensitive paint and a new piezo-fludic actuator. Gregory has since received his doctorate in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue and is currently in a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Air Force Research Laboratory.

“It was a tremendous honor for me to receive the 2006 Engineering Student of the Year Award. The recognition afforded by this international award has facilitated my job search and enhanced my resume – it certainly attracts the attention of prospective employers. The awards reception was a fabulous evening and a wonderful opportunity to meet many leaders in aviation and aerospace. I had many fascinating conversations and networking opportunities throughout the evening. I also enjoyed attending a major international airshow and seeing the new and emerging products in the aviation industry.”
