Boeing is continuing to study a business jet derivative of the 757, dubbed the BBJ3, but will have to modify its joint-venture agreement with General Electric if it decides to market the aircraft through Boeing Business Jets, says new president Leo Monson.

The Boeing/GE venture was formed to market the 737-700-based, CFM56-powered BBJ, and now the 737-800-based BBJ2. But as GE does not offer an engine for the 757, it will "require a different structure [to the venture]", says Monson, adding: "We are working through the issues."

One option is for Boeing Business Jets to act simply as the interface between Boeing and customers wanting corporate versions of the manufacturer's other aircraft, including arranging interior completion.

The venture, meanwhile, plans to reduce production of 737-based BBJs next year because of the slowing US economy. "We will deliver 21 this year. Next year we will scale back," says Monson.

Boeing has delivered 57 green BBJs, of which 32 have entered service.
