Boeing announced late Monday that it was to make around 900 jobs at its Wichita, Kansas-based defence facility redundant.
The job cuts correspond to around one-quarter of all employees at the plant. The company cites defence budget cuts and delays in contracts for the redundancies.
The remaining 2,700 workers will focus on military work including 747 special missions work and modification projects. Wichita will also focus engineering work on the B-52 Stratofortress.
The first 360 workers left this week and will be followed by the remainder by the end of July and 300 more jobs will be cut in mid-November, the company says.
