Boeing has named a new executive with a background in both 737 and 777 production to lead new product development.

Elizabeth Lund, 43, replaces Todd Zarfos as the new VP of product development. Zarfos has been appointed VP for engineering for three widebody aircraft – the 747, 767 and 777.

Lund’s new job requires her to manage the overall research and development plan for commercial aircraft, lead preliminary design for new and derivative aircraft and support strategic and advanced technology organizations.

Lund will report to Mike Denton, VP of engineering for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

“Elizabeth Lund brings a wide range of skills and background in both engineering and manufacturing to the product development team,” says Denton.

Plans for Boeing’s next commercial aircraft after the 787 have been in flux for the past year. Several months ago, Boeing postponed the 737 replacement from 2012 to 2015, and now the company only says the next narrowbody will appear in the latter half of the next decade.

At the same time, there has been increased interest on the widebody front. The stretched 787-10 remains a part of Boeing’s long-term plans, but the company also does not rule out the introduction of an all-new widebody to compete with the A350-1000.

Lund comes into the position from her post since 2005 as director of 777 manufacturing, where she led the introduction of a moving assembly line in 2006.

Lund also worked in various posts on 737 production from 1991 to at least 2003, rising to 737 deputy chief project engineer.

In between those two posts, Lund also worked as the director of the interiors responsibility centre, and director of business operations and supply chain management for Boeing’s fabrication division.
