Boeing has decided to subcontract production of passenger and cargo doors for its 737, 757 and 767 airliners, despite union efforts to persuade the company to retain the work in-house. The manufacturer says that the move is a cost-cutting measure. Its introduction follows a two-year study.

Northrop Grumman says that it has been awarded the contract, with a "potential value of more than $400 million", to manufacture 28 different doors, used on 737s, 747s, 75s7 and 767s. Northrop already produces 12 passenger and cargo doors for each 747. The Los Angeles-based company says that it plans eventually to consolidate all of its door-production activities into a single site in Georgia.
