Boeing and two of its main 7E7 partners, Alenia and Saab, visited Poland in mid-December to look for potential companies to manufacture tooling and jigs for the new widebody twinjet.

The team toured the Institute of Aviation in Warsaw, the Military Aviation Works No 2 in Bydgoszcz, PZL Swidnik, PZL Mielec and WZK Mielec as well as Pratt &Whitney subsidiary PZL Rzeszow. PZL Mielec manufactures jigs for Airbus A380 subassemblies and PZL Mielec has been sole supplier of Boeing 757 passenger doors since the mid-1980s.

"Now that 757 production has ended, we've been looking for ways of keeping Polish industry involved in our programmes," says Boeing.

The aim is to tie up suitable companies by the first quarter of 2005. Boeing says there will be "around 10 million hours" of work available to Polish companies. It confirms that any deal will not depend on sales of aircraft to Polish flag carrier LOT, but will be arranged "entirely on a commercial basis".
