US manufacturer predicts it will retake pole position from European rival with 2008 introduction of 787 series

Boeing looks set to close the production gap on European rival Airbus next year, following its decision to boost its 2006 delivery forecast to just below 400 aircraft.

The US manufacturer has been shaded by Airbus in delivery terms since 2003, but by 2006 the gulf between the two manufacturers – which peaks this year at 40 aircraft – will narrow significantly.

Boeing has reconfirmed that its delivery forecast for 2005 remains unchanged at around 320 aircraft but says it will boost 2006 shipments from a planned 375-385 to 395. Airbus major shareholder EADS has restated it will deliver more than 360 aircraft this year and around 400 aircraft in 2006.

Boeing is confident that it will retake the output lead when deliveries of its 787 begin in 2008.
