Boeing is using Elbit Systems capabilities in developing fighter cockpit systems to strengthen its presence in the Brazilian market.
The cooperation recently resulted in a networked simulator demonstration involving a device for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet installed at Boeing's St Louis site in Missouri and another located in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
The Super Hornet simulator was connected to a cockpit and systems development laboratory operated by Elbit's Brazilian subsidiary AEL Sistemas. The facility was built as part of an avionics upgrade programme for the Brazilian air force's Northrop F-5s performed by the Israeli company.
During the demonstration, pilots were able to fly a Super Hornet and F-5 together in a virtual Brazilian airspace, with both participants also having fired weapons at simulated threats.
Boeing earlier this year selected Elbit to provide a large area display and low-profile head-up display for the Super Hornet and its developmental F-15SE Silent Eagle. The US company is offering the former type as a contender in Brazil's F-X2 fighter competition, with rivals including the Dassault Rafale and Saab Gripen E/F. A decision in the contest has recently been delayed until mid-2013, according to local media reports.
