BOEING DEFENSE & Space is bidding to supply the US Department of Defense with a Global Broadcast Service (GBS) designed to move large blocks of data such as intelligence maps, video imagery, data files and technical manuals to troops in the field in real time via satellite, using low-cost receiver terminals.

The Boeing team, which also includes Microsoft, Harris, Lucent Technologies, Pacific Sierra Research and TRW, says contract award is set for this September. A key element is DigitalXpress, a commercial satellite-based digital information-transfer system.

The GBS effort is being handled by the military satellite communications Joint Programme Office at Los Angeles AFB, California.
