Boeing is establishing a branch of its Phantom Works advanced research and development unit in Australia as part of the company's growing presence in the country.

The new unit, to be officially launched in early March, will be based in Melbourne and Brisbane and will be the focus for the manufacturer's research and development in the country and collaboration with local research and development organisations, including universities, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.

The branch, which will employ 30 senior engineers, scientists and researchers, will focus on technology areas including composite resin infusion, light robotics for manufacturing and precision coatings, ageing aircraft maintenance, applications of advanced unmanned air vehicles, network centric operations and aerospace environmental applications.

The move is in recognition of the excellent talent pool that exists in the country, says Boeing Australia. Boeing's Australian activities, which include Boeing Australia, Hawker de Havilland, Jeppesen Australia and Alteon Training Australia, are the largest in any country outside of the USA, with the company employing around 4,000 in Australia.
