Boeing Satellite Systems is to build its 10th Astra communications satellite for Luxembourg-based Société Européenne des Satellites (SES). Astra 3A will be a high-power spin-stabilised Boeing 376HP model. The contract also includes launch services in 2002 with a provider and ground station control software to be chosen later. Astra 3A will augment SES' satellite fleet to help meet the growing demand for digital services. It will be equipped with 24 Ku-band transponders, providing high-power direct-to-home television services to Europe from geostationary orbit at 23.5°E. Two other Astra satellites are being built by Boeing, bringing to 14 the number that will be operated by SES, 10 of which are Boeing supplied. The manufacturer is also building Astra 2C, a Boeing 601HP three- axis stabilised high-power model, and Astra 2D, a Boeing 376. It has also supplied four601 and three 601HP buses in orbit.
