Boeing president Phil Condit will assume the additional role of chief executive, taking over from Frank Shrontz, who has served in this position since April 1986. The long-expected move makes Condit only the seventh person to lead the company in its 80-year history. Condit has served as president and a member of the Boeing board since 1992, and his recent background as executive vice-president of the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group (BCAG) and general manager of the 777 division was viewed as the classic grooming for his new role. Schrontz will remain as chairman - a position he has occupied since 1988. Condit joined Boeing in 1965, as an aerodynamics engineer, on the Supersonic Transport programme and subsequently, held leading positions on the 757 development effort. He also held several senior roles within BCAG, at which he was still executive vice-president of the group in 1989 when he also became general manager of the 777 division.
