Bombardier has placed its first African CRJ900 order with today’s announcement that Nigerian startup Arik Air will take two of the type.
The deal is valued at about $69 million, at list price. The aircraft will be operational in July. Both will be configured with 10 business-class and 65 economy-class seats.
“We are delighted that Arik Air will introduce the Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft to African travelers,” says Bombardier Regional Aircraft president Steven Ridolfi.
“Arik Air will benefit from an aircraft with the best operating economics in its class while its passengers will enjoy excellent cabin comfort and the benefits of international aviation standards.”
The airline’s managing director Alex van Elk adds: “With our new Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft, we are setting new standards that will change the face of the aviation industry in Nigeria and offer a totally new travel experience linking the provinces of the country with our largest cities.”
Arik Air moved into the former Nigeria Airlines facilities in Lagos in April. The airline also plans to operate two previously owned Boeing 737s and three previously owned 2003 vintage Bombardier CRJ200 regional jets, says the Canadian manufacturer in its statement.
