The company which makes leather chairs for Britain's legislators is aiming to find a firm seat for itself in the aircraft industry.

Whittle Leather's debut at Le Bourget could soon give travellers the chance to relax in similarly plush surroundings while zipping through the skies. From its base in Liverpool, Whittle is counting on airline passengers' ever-increasing demands for comfort to spur an investment in leather by major airlines.

Like traditional fabrics, the leather seating would have to pass stringent safety tests but, according to Whittle, leather requires only one initial treatment to ensure that it is totally fire retardent, whereas other materials need regular protective coatings.
