Embraer has selected Israel's Elbit Systems to upgrade the avionics in Brazilian air force Northrop F-5s, under a contract estimated to be worth $180 million. Elbit is believed to have lowered its bid from $230 million.

Elbit is already contracted to develop the avionics for the air force's ALX light combat/advanced trainer, an armed version of the Embraer Super Tucano, and has been selected by the Brazilian manufacturer to supply the avionics for the upgraded AMX Advanced Tactical Aircraft.

All three applications are based on the same avionics architecture, which features redundant mission computers and large-format liquid-crystal multifunction displays. The upgrade provides full hands-on-throttle and stick control and improved weapons management.

The deal is Elbit's second upgrade award in two months. In September, Turkey selected it as part of an IAI-led consortium for a $70 million upgrade of its F-5s.
