Brazil's defence ministry has formed a committee to guide and specify the technical requirements for an unmanned air vehicle to equip the country's three armed services.
Seeking a locally manufactured solution, the initiative is also aimed at unifying the acquisition processes that the three services have already established for their individual UAV programmes.
Brazil's armed forces have widely varying operational requirements for UAVs. The air force and army both specified an electro-optical and infrared sensor fit for their platforms, but the former wants UAVs to perform reconnaissance, electronic warfare and target designation tasks, while the army is to conduct border surveillance duties against FARC rebels. Brazil's navy is looking for a vertical take-off and landing reconnaissance UAV capable of operating from its frigates and corvettes.
The committee is also to address the needs of other federal agencies.
