THE BRAZILIAN authorities have seized an Ilyushin Il-76 transport aircraft carrying military spares to the Peruvian air force. Peru and Ecuador are involved in a border dispute.

The aircraft, which was seized at Ortaleza Airport, was bound for Lima and carried spares for Peruvian Mil Mi-8 Hips. Ecuador has already shot down three Mi-8s, along with two Sukhoi Su-22 Fitters and one Cessna A-37.

Although the Il-76 bore Aeroflot markings, the Russian foreign ministry has denied any involvement in providing military spares to Peru. Aeroflot insists, that the aircraft belongs to, Ukrainian airline Atlanta-Soyuz.
