MERGER TALKS Brazil's flag carrier Varig has reaffirmed its interest in a tie-up with rival TAM, saying that the merger is the best way forward for Brazil's long-haul airline industry. Varig president Ozires Silva is calling for government support for its proposal, which would link the Star Alliance member with Air France codeshare partner TAM. Talks between the two carriers suffered a setback in July with the death of TAM president Rolim Amaro in a helicopter crash.
