Two inspectors from the UK's Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) were on their way to the Paris crash site within two hours of the tragedy, with a third due to follow this morning.

Although the crashed aircraft was an Air France machine and the incident occurred in French airspace, the British inspectors would be actively assisting with the investigation, rather than having merely observer status, says an AAIB spokesman last night.

"We have a reciprocal arrangement with France over Concorde. There's a standing agreement between us because it's a dual-build aircraft," the spokesman explains.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority said last night it would be improper for it to take any action regarding the British Airways (BA) fleet of Concordes until the French investigators had revealed any preliminary findings.
