BELL HELICOPTER Textron's rotorcraft segment hit much turbulence in 2008 when soaring costs forced the US Army to cancel its Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter. But Bell still notched up 93% profit growth to $278 million for the year - including 74% growth in the fourth quarter - as revenue grew 9.5% to $2.8 billion. Higher revenues from the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor programme offset lost ARH revenue and lower commercial helicopter income.

Operating revenues grew from $19.1 billion to $22.7 billion as expenses jumped from $18 billion to $31 billion. Fourth quarter losses ballooned to $1.4 billion, from $70 million last year, including $91 million lost on fuel hedging contracts.
