ROW44 The in-flight broadband systems developer won special temporary US Federal Communications Commission authority to operate up to 12 earth stations for testing, including in-flight testing. The award is a significant step toward permanent FCC authority and boosts the California company's credibility. It plans to offer Ku-band-based connectivity to airlines. Users so far include Southwest, with four Row 44-equipped Boeing 737s.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES Compulsory leave is on the cards for 19 Boeing 777 captains based in Brisbane and Perth because the carrier is replacing the type with Airbus A330s on those routes. But another reason SIA is "retrenching" the pilots is that it has too many flyers, with recession-driven fleet downsizing coming this year after a period of aggressive recruitment. Set for decomissioning in the financial year starting 1 April are 17 older 777s and Boeing 747-400s.
