GKN AEROSPACE Delivery of the 1,000th nacelle for the Lockheed Martin C-130J programme marked a successful 17-year production run, with GKN's output rate set to increase from 18 aircraft sets a year in 2008 to near double that in 2011. On the back of a five-year contract extension signed in 2009, GKN has invested in a new production line at its Isle of Wight facility in the UK. GKN has been sole C-130J nacelle supplier since 1993.

Bad week

American Airlines MD-80

AMERICAN AIRLINES The US Federal Aviation Administration has proposed the largest fine in its history - $24.2 million - against the carrier, for failing to complete steps outlined in a 2006 airworthiness directive requiring the inspection of wire bundles in the wheel wells of Boeing MD-80s. The AD sought to prevent arcing in auxiliary hydraulic pumps, which could result in the loss of auxiliary hydraulic power or a fire in the wheel well - or a fuel tank explosion.
