HEAVY METAL UK wet-lease specialist Astraeus Airlines has appointed Bruce Dickinson to the newly created position of marketing director. Dickinson, who is better-known as the lead singer with Iron Maiden, is a Boeing 757 and 737 pilot for the carrier. He says the post is partly an "ambassador role", but business growth has him taking on some of the workload of leasing director Shaun Monnery.

Astraeus operates 11 aircraft: 757s, 737s and an Airbus A320.

CARBON TRADING The planned use of 2010 as a benchmark for the European Union's emissions trading scheme would be unfair to northern European carriers because they were hit harder than southern rivals by the volcano-related airspace closures in April, says British Airways boss Willie Walsh. Speaking to the European Aviation Club in Brussels, Walsh called for "a compensating adjustment" to the scheme, due to be implemented in 2012.
