BWIA West Indies Airways made a net profit of TT$23 million ($3.7 million) last year, nearly 60% down on 1998's result, when the carrier made its first profit after 57 years of losses. The result was achieved despite increased competition from US and Canadian charter airlines which cost BWIA TT$75.5 million ($12.3 million) in revenues. Turnover still grew 6% to TT$1.5 billion.
