His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent presented the 1996 UK Civil Aviation Authority General Aviation Safety Award, the Tiger Moth Trophy, to Richard Sharman (centre) in a ceremony at London's Royal Air Force Club. The award is sponsored by the CAA to recognise "...achievements which make an exceptional contribution to flight safety", as a part of its campaign to raise flight-safety awareness in the general-aviation community. Sharman, from Bromley, Kent, recovered a glider to level flight when its elevator-control rod sheared during a dive. He brought the aircraft to an emergency landing with no pitch control. Runners-up for the prize were John Spooner (right) from Woodhouse Eaves, Leicester, and Tony Unwin (left) of Stoneallerton, Somerset.
