CAE Eletronik has begun work on a DM251 million ($166 million) contract to supply up to 12 helicopter flight-simulators for the German army's aviation school at Buckeburg, near Hanover. The DM112 million initial contract is for two Bell UH-1D and two Sikorsky CH-53G simulators, for delivery at the beginning of 1999. A DM139 million option covering eight additional simulators representing a new primary flight training helicopter yet to be selected by the Germany army.

These would be delivered between 1999 and 2000. Each simulator will have a six-axis motion system and a dome visual system providing a 240°-horizontal by 90°-vertical field of view.

A CAE MaxVue image-generator will provide eight channels for outside-world scenes, two channels for night-vision-goggle imagery and one for the instructor-station displays. Thomson Training & Simulation is providing the dome display system, which has new liquid-crystal light-valve projectors. A roll-on/roll-off cockpit cab will allow for rapid reconfiguration of each simulator, says the German subsidiary of Canadian manufacturer CAE. The simulators will be used for ab initio and recurrent training of crews.
